FAQ

A rubber bellow, also called a rubber expansion joint, is a flexible connector made from reinforced elastomeric materials that is installed between pipe sections or between equipment and piping to absorb movement, dampen vibration, and reduce noise transmission. It works by flexing and stretching in response to pipe movement caused by thermal expansion, pressure surges, or mechanical vibration, rather than transmitting those forces to connected equipment. The bellow consists of a flexible inner tube made of rubber or elastomer, reinforcement layers of synthetic fabric or metal wire for pressure retention, and an outer cover for environmental protection. Flanged ends allow for direct bolting between standard pipe flanges. Rubber bellows can accommodate axial compression and extension, lateral offset, and angular deflection simultaneously, providing multi-directional flexibility that rigid pipe sections cannot achieve.

Rubber bellows are most commonly installed at the suction and discharge connections of centrifugal pumps to isolate pump vibration from the piping system and to allow for minor misalignment between the pump nozzles and connecting pipes. They are also widely used in HVAC systems at chiller evaporator and condenser connections, cooling tower piping, and in boiler feedwater and hot water circulation lines where thermal movement is significant. Compressor suction and discharge lines benefit from rubber bellows to absorb pulsation and vibration. In industrial process plants, they are installed at connections to sensitive equipment such as turbines, heat exchangers, and instrumentation to protect against pipeline stress. Marine applications include shipboard piping systems where hull flexing and vibration are constant factors. They are also effective in reducing noise transmission through pipes in occupied building spaces.
